Soroptimist Wexford organised a very successful "afternoon teaparty" in lovely sunshine to raise funds for "Dragon boating" a water-based team-paddling sport which originated in China over 2000 years ago.

Research has shown that a gradual programme of upper-body exercise in those treated for breast cancer can help improve movement to the area of surgery/or radiation therapy.

The boat has been renovated by volunteers from the Wexford Boatclub.
The money raised will be used for the purchase of paddles.

Visit to The Netherlands April 21 to April 25, 2016

National President Sarah McCormack, IPP Margaret Geraghty and members of SI Drogheda, Athlone and Wexford visited The Netherlands by invitation of Club SI Lisse-De Bollenstreek.

The purpose of the visit was participating in fundraising events organised by the Dutch Soroptimists in conjuntion with UNICEF to raise money for their project "Syria Back to School". The purpose of this project is to build schools outside the refugee camps to educate Syrian children and thus prevent "a lost generation".

The events included touring the tulip fields, the famous "Keukenhof" flowergardens, a private view of the floats being prepared for the annual flower parade. Visiting the city of Haarlem incl. Frans Hals museum, a canal trip through Amsterdam, visit to the Royal Palace and a wonderful dinner cooked by members of the guest club!

The highlight of the visit was a concert in the National Concert building in Amsterdam by the Russian pianist Misha Fomin. Prior to the concert Soroptimists from various European countries attended a special gathering chaired by Int. President Elect Mariet Verhoef-Cohen.

On that occasion a cheque for € 300.000.- was presented to the Director of UNICEF.

This project runs for 3 years and is currently at the start of the 3rd year. The target set was € 300.000.- and it is a remarkable achievement that this goal has already been reached!

Hopefully more money will be raised in the coming months to allow more children to benefit from a very much needed education.
